Culasses and Culbuteurs Part Two

IV.
Une heure plus tard...
Avec Mogette Miniature
In the summer fleurs
And Big Mogette
The sun was down below
The canopy of oak trees
(Quercus Robusta, if you, chers et chères Mogettistes
Would like to know)

And Proprio was busy, très occupé encore
Adjusting Mogette’s CULBUTEURS

« A funny word, un mot bien drôle »
Remarqua la Petite Citroën…
« What do you mean, mon petit chou, my dear profiterolle ? »
Demanda le Propriétaire...

« Eh bien…CULBUTEUR, bien sûr ;
From the word  CUL, (en anglais BOTTOM or, more informally, BUM  )
Or BUTT  or ASS en anglais Americ-an,

In French the cylinder head is CULASSE…

Oui, oui, CUL-ASS, you see !
As in Cul de Sac, an anglais IMPASSE…
And en français nous avons « Cul de poule »
(which is a mixing bowl, and not the bum of a chicken...)

And BUTEUR, which is not butter or beurre,
...or margarine
But from the verb « BUTER »
Which, en anglais is to KICK
A buteur is a footballeur...

Proprio. See what I mean?"

Proprio répondit:

« My dear Mogette
Merci
For the KICKING of ASS  étymologie
Cependant, however, as you can see
I am more interressé
Just as soon as you can reach those pedals, mon petit...
In making sure your culbuteurs are réglés
At précisément
Huit millièmes de pouce
(or the équivalent in dixièmes of millimètres)

Bicoz

If they are trop large or too… LOOSE
Your moteur will not start when FROID
And I, Proprio will be LE ROI
Des CONS : a silly ASS
And, when hot,  your CARBU
it will…
TOUSSE.
And then, what shall we do ?

And Mogette, who has many connaissances and much knowledge
Looked across at the green garden hedge
And, very modestly
Delivered another leçon of vocabulary :

"O. U. G. H...
She started off:
A bizarre English collection of four letters
Which I will help you
To undertand a little better...

Voici la leçon, mécano-proprio:
With culbuteurs ajustés, Mogette can climb all day...(Mont Ventoux, 2019)

« in English TOUSSE is COUGH
Which rhymes with OFF
But not with TOUGH or ROUGH
Which sound like FLUFF
And not with BOUGH, or PLOUGH
Which rhyme with COW
COUGH does not rhyme with PETERBOROUGH
Or with THOROUGH

Or THROUGH
Which rhymes with YOU)

« Who, ME ? »
Répondit Le Proprio
Who had stopped listening
A minute or more ago...

"Ma chère Mogette
I love you and your vocabulary antics
But, quelquefois, sometimes
You can become a bit pedantic..."

V.
And there
In the COOLER evening air
Mogette et Propriétaire
LAUGHED OUT LOUD
« LOL » en anglais
Said Proprio
« MDR » traduisit la CeeVee Two
Not pédantique du tout :
"Mort De Rire…Et in hilaria ego !"

And so
It goes without saying
Ca va sans dire
That the only thing to do now
Was, après pause pour une BEER
 Bien fraîche,
To put the wings back on La Deuche

Then, allons-y et Go Go Go
En route pour les faux-bilingual aventures
With Culasses and with Culbuteurs.

Dixit Mogette, in référence to this blog
« Not beaucoup de philo ici,
Principalement mauvaise poésie,
et comme référence mécanique,
 A bit shit, aussi. »

I.
A HOT summer evening
Belle soirée d’été
Of deux-mille dix-neuf

Odeurs of August fleurs
Hummingbird moths
Macroglossum Stellatarum/Hummingbird hawkmoth/Papillon Colibri. Merci Wiki.
Dipping, sipping nectar
Of lavender...

Mogette
The 2CV Coquette
Was prête
For une révision
Complète ;

« Dear Proprio »
Dixit La Deux-Chevaux
« How far can we go
To prepare my annual  voyages estivaux ? »

« All the way, ma chère »
Répondit le Propriétaire
D’un air mécano-nonchalant
Et débonnaire
Qui, avec the habituel très bad bilingual poésie
Was torse nu without his shirt-y
Preparing to get down and to get dirt-y…

II.
The new pièces had all arrived :
Spark plugs (bougies)
And contact breakers…(vis platinés…)
Filtres à huile, essence and air
 Semi-synthétique huile moteur
A courroie, or fanbelt, for the alternateur…

And, spécialement ;
A big yellow TUBE
Of Graisse universelle LUBE-
-RIFIANT
Réjuvénateur  par excellence
From the new brico-shop

Black plastic colliers and silver gaffa tape
Which, en France, we call « Gros Scotch »
(Very sticky, but not Whisky)...

A wink of eye to Forty Shades of Gris ?
Mogette en Strip-Teaseuse...

Last but not least…
A mega- boîte of blue…
…Latex
…Gloves.

« Oh dear »
Soupira Mogette
Those gants of examination médicale
Will help to keep your fingers clean
Or « propre » my dear Proprio
When opérations become
A little...
… delicate
If you understand what I mean »

And Proprio, pour une fois, started feeling
A little HOT under the collar
With Mogette’s commentaires
In the warm air
And, peut-être
The heat of the evening there…

III.
Dix minutes plus tard…
Voilà Mogette
En position
 On the summer gazon
On two rusty ramps, purchased second-hand and  d’occasion
More than forty years ago
Year of la heatwave canicule
En Angleterre,
When Proprio was a student and a holiday ice-cream vendor there…

Ice cream in mille neuf cent soixante-seize, dear Proprio !
Exclama Mogette
«What a clever coup ! »
« Oh yes, ma belle
Another bloody story to be had
In poésie very bad
Another day. »

Then Mogette had nothing more to say
While Proprio went into the garage
To put on his latex gloves and his courage…

« And what do you think, dear Propriétaire »
Dixit Mogette, when he returned
« Of le nouveau premier ministre British
A genius or a trublion troublemaker ? »

And Proprio
Who was très occupé
With his clé anglaise (SPANNER) de huit millimètres
Removing Mogette’s
 Ailes avants
Her front-wing  outer vêtements
Souria and smiled

And kept le silence…

To be continued...

Tea and Tilleuls Part Three

PART ONE CLICK HERE

PART TWO CLICK HERE

Mogette La Deux-Chevaux Coquette
When she is on the roads
Of La Belle France
Adores le morning tea-time:
Casserole...
Camping-Gaz, water bouillonnant...

Souvent...
Un moment
Of réfléxion...
Mogette visited Oradour in 2000 and in 2018

CUP OF TEA CONVERSATION...

"Proprio" Dixit Mogette
In perfume of  tea and tilleul flowers...

"I know Proprio, that you do not forget
That today is the anniversaire
Of the massacre d'Oradour...

And you are thinking
Of the six hundred and forty-two victimes
And that they did not spare the children"...

"Yes, my dear Mogette"
Came Proprio's réplique
Between tea and tears...

"And of notre passage
en avril
Deux Mille
When we met
A man called Jean
In the Church of Oradour..."

"Ah oui"
Répondit La Deuche
"That is another Story, Une Autre Histoire..."

Et Proprio poursuivit
And carried on
in sombre tone...

"I was thinking that,
 in this moderne monde politique
Of bouffonneries and frivolités, corrosives et pathétiques,
of indifférence électorale...
We must not forget
That on our Continent;
This must never happen again"...

Silence.

Et Mogette pensa
A l'histoire de Srebrenica
And of the impuissance, the powerlessness,
In nineteen-ninety-five
Of our Union Européenne

And Mogette kept her silence, too...

Then, as proprio packed the Camping Gaz away
And in the PRESENT day
Mogette et son propriétaire
Finished their tasse de thé, there
In Melle
Jolie bourgade
Of ancient Mines d'Argent
Of églises romanes classés
Au patrimoine UNESCO de L'Humanité

And of écologie citoyenne.

Here is a photograph
Click on Mogette to visit Melle (3 minutes)
Of the Allée of Tilleuls
Collection Nationale
Peaceful, paisible
Et précieux
A place where there was no-one, personne
To perturb
 Quiet réfléxion...
And to conclude that the future
Is with our children,
Our grandchildren
And their
éducation...

Et Mogette, In Arboretum et Arcadia, elle
Sans vouloir idéaliser...
Concluded that, today, in Melle

Notre Europe,
Belle,
Et un peu compliquée

Continue
to
S'inventer.

And,
With our implication
Our Histoire
Writes

Itself...

On this Pentecostal lundi...
In our Europe of second décennie
Of twenty-first century
La Vie...
Even with its désillusions and its distractions pathéto-politiques
La Vie
Elle...
... aussi...
(Et même en mauvaise poésie)
Like Tea
And Tilleuls
Surtout and above all else...
...est
Magnifique.

Tea and Tilleuls Part Two

Coquelicots/poppies near to Niort...
PART ONE CLICK HERE
PREMIERE PARTIE CLIQUEZ ICI

Citroëns and Citrus fruit?
En français we call citrons, oranges et autres pamplemousse
"Agrumes"
or "Héspéridés"

Anyway...
LIMES are "citrons verts"...
And un "Tilleul" is,
Confusingly
A Lime Tree...

Like souvenirs involontaires
A bitten citrus lime can be bitter
(In French we say "amer")

Mogette espère
That you will enjoy these quelques vers
Of poésie embarrassante mais sincère
Of mémoire... involontaire...

Voici
Mogette's Pentecostal journey
 In June Deux-Mille dix-neuf
When travelling to La Haute-Vienne
Via other river-named départements:
 Vendée,  Deux-Sèvres Vienne
 et Charente...

LIMES AND LIME TREES

Mogette La 2CV Coquette
Adore les sorties dominicales
On Les Routes secondaires,
Départementales
Especially la neuf-quatre-huit,
Celle...
Which starts on an Atlantique
Island...
Qui traverse Melle
...Celles Sur Belle...
And terminates

Near Oradour-sur Glâne.

Alors;
Not on a Sunday, but lundi dernier
A French "almost-public-holiday"
...Le dix juin...
Mogette est allée
...avec son proprio
Entre boulot...
 et balade
Between work, pèlerinage and
Promenade...

Where she paused
Between two ronds-points
Recently abandonnés by
Les Gilets Yellow
For a photo
On une borne kilométrique
En plastique
Near to Niort...

To follow the histoire
Of notre little French car
Who can go very far
With just a soupçon
Of essence...

A pause...
To share
The morning air, a cup of tea
A tragic, douloureux
Seventy-fifth, soixante-quinzième
 Anniversary...
And the delicate fragrance: honey
Of
Tilleul
(Prononcé "Tea, Earl?")
Which
In English
Is not
Earl (Grey)
... or even... Tea
But a LIME tree,
You see...

A faux-ami.

Bicoz:
Le Tilleul in these mauvaise poésie vers...
Produces perfumed flowers
And not

Citrons Verts

A little after kilomètre zéro
On the Island of Noirmoutier
There is un chemin submersible
(En anglais,  causeway), four thousand metres and more,
Called Le Gois
And when the niveau
Of la mer is low
This passage, spectaculaire et épatant
Links toujours, today, une île et un continent...

The ancienne Nationale travels on

Then on again
Just to the north
Of Le Marais Poitevin, a Nature's Venice, green...

To Niort...
Capitale, thanks to Seventies Autoroute A-Ten
 Of administration décentralisée and abbreviatonnée:
CAMIF, MAIF and MGEN...

Niort, pôle of emplois
And of paperasserie...
(In English, "Red Tape"...
Colourful imagerie!)

Notre Nationale of seventy-five years ago
Départementale now,
Continues across Les Deux-Sèvres département;
Tournesol, soon yellow
Pylônes and wind turbines, géants, tournants
And then goes on encore...

Eventuellement
To join another road
West of Limoges...
Not far from Saint-Junien

And Oradour

And today, aujourd'hui, lundi dix juin
A Melle, sous les tilleuls, tea with Madeleine?
Under the lime trees
Les Tilleuls
Of the Arboretum in Melle
Half way
Between Noirmoutier
And Oradour...

Today, our intrépide bicylindre compagnonne
Toujours mignonne
Stopped in the middle of la matinée
With une pensée,
Un moment in sombre réflexion
 That seventy-five years ago,
In an old telephone kiosque!
Today
Was l'horreur, the horror
...of Oradour...

En bonne citoyenne d'Europe
On our...
